BSA logoThousands of people (including myself) will be descending upon Bradford this autumn for the British Science Association’s annual Festival. This year there is also a ‘Fringe‘ event running concomitantly that targets younger audiences.

I will be delivering the Margaret Mead Award Lecture on the topic of “Who Owns Space”, and will also be on a panel discussing SETI/ METI.

The 2015 British Science Festival – supported by headline sponsor Siemens – will be hosted by the University of Bradford from 7-10 September.

The British Science Association (BSA) will bring cutting-edge British science to the fore and celebrate the importance of science in our society.

Across the four days there will be more than 100 free events taking place both on campus and in venues across the city – including the National Media Museum, Waterstones, the Studio, Bombay Stores, the Society of Dyers and Colourists, and the bars, cafes and shops in Bradford’s independent quarter and North Parade.

The programme will feature a series of talks, debates and performances from across the scientific spectrum, and includes events curated by the BSA’s scientific sections as well as the 2015 winners of our prestigious annual Award Lecture series.”

Dr Jill Stuart is an academic based at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She is an expert in the politics, ethics and law of outer space exploration and exploitation. She is a frequent presence in the global media (print, radio, television, documentary) and regularly gives lectures around the world. From 2013-2017 she was Editor in Chief of the Elsevier journal Space Policy where she remains on the Editorial Board. She is also on the Board of Advisors of METI International, conducting scientific research into messaging potential extraterrestrial intelligence. She is one of an elite number of people to be endorsed by the UK Home Office as an Exceptional Talent Migrant/ World Leader in her Field. In 2015 she was awarded the prestigious Margaret Mead Award Lecture by the British Science Association in recognition of her cutting edge research. She is trained in both domestic and international mediation and has done consultancy work for the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. She has a sub-specialism in women, peace and security and gender based violence. She is a Trustee of Luton All Women’s Centre.
