IISS Event on Outer Space Security: 30 May 2012
I look forward to attending the following:
Maintaining the long-term sustainability
and security of outer space
‘The benefits of space-based systems permeate almost every aspect of our daily lives. Such systems help warn of natural disasters, facilitate global navigation and communications, and expand our scientific frontiers. They provide access to worldwide financial operations and allow national decision-makers to monitor strategic and military developments.
However, the long-term sustainability of our space environment is at serious risk from space debris. As US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton recently said: ‘Unless the international community addresses these challenges, the environment around our planet will become increasingly hazardous to human spaceflight and satellite systems, which would create damaging consequences for all of us.’
The meeting will be chaired by Adam Ward, Director of Studies, IISS. It will be held in The Council Room at Arundel House.
Tea and coffee from 10am.
