I am proud to be a Trustee of the recently created METI International–Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

This forthcoming documentary details the debate between the SETI and METI community…whether we should only be listening to extraterrestrials (SETI), or also actively making efforts to contact them (METI).

My own position in favour of METI is laid out in several interviews that I did for the BBC World Service on the topic (“Reaching for the Stars“; “Is there anybody Out There?“), as well as a Government Department Hotseat interview (“Jill Stuart on METI“).

A Swedish documentary crew has a film (still in production) titled “Earthling’s Quest: Alien Hunters and a Message to the Stars”.

The film is “An unique SETI feature length documentary in the search for aliens parallel with the quest to start broadcasting messages from Earth.

“This is no fiction – this is the human pursuit for extraterrestrial intelligence led by real-life legends from the SETI Institute in California. Eavesdropping on ET has been around for a long time, the search for an alien signal that would change everything. Is it time that we start broadcasting targeted signals as well? If so, are we putting the entire civilization at risk? Prominent scientists think so. In this film you will see the hunt for the alien signal along with METI Internationals quest to start the controversial project of broadcasting messages from Earth.”

There is a kickstarter campaign to help finish the film if you would like to contribute. Or else if you have an interest in SETI and/or METI I hope that you’ll be able to come see the film when it is out.
